The Starting Point

Why GTmetrix Grade B to A Was Harder Than It Looked

MatrixeTech is a WordPress site selling phone cases and accessories, so the pages are image-led by design. When we first tested it, GTmetrix returned a grade of B: Performance 90%, Structure 85%, Largest Contentful Paint 1.8 seconds, Total Blocking Time 0ms, Cumulative Layout Shift 0.

That is not a broken website. Most site owners would look at 90% Performance and reasonably conclude there was nothing left to fix. The problem with moving from GTmetrix grade B to A on a site like this is that the obvious wins are already banked — there was no render-blocking JavaScript backlog to clear and no layout shift to chase, because both were already at zero.

The remaining gap sat almost entirely in Structure, which is the audit category covering how efficiently the page is actually built. On an accessories store with large product photography on every row, that pointed in one direction: the images.

Worth saying plainly: a site scoring 0ms Total Blocking Time and 0 Cumulative Layout Shift before we touched it is already in decent shape. We are not claiming to have rescued a slow website. We are documenting how a well-built site crossed the final threshold.

The Work

What Actually Moved GTmetrix Grade B to A

The entire route from GTmetrix grade B to A was image delivery. No host migration, no theme swap, no new plugin stack layered on top of the site.

    Compressed every oversized image
    Product photography was being uploaded at full camera resolution and scaled down in the browser. We compressed the source files so the served image matches the size it is actually displayed at, which is the single audit that GTmetrix’s Structure score punishes hardest on retail sites.

    Converted images to WebP
    WebP delivers the same visual quality at a substantially smaller file size than JPEG or PNG. This is the “serve images in next-gen formats” audit, and on an image-heavy catalogue it accounts for most of the transferred page weight.

    Enabled lazy loading below the fold
    Images further down the page no longer compete with the hero image for bandwidth during the initial load. That is what pulled Largest Contentful Paint from 1.8s to 1.7s — the browser stops downloading things the visitor cannot see yet.

Structure moved from 85% to 89%, and that was the margin needed for the overall grade to flip. Performance moved one point, from 90% to 91%, which is what you would expect on a site whose blocking time was already zero. Three image audits were the whole distance from GTmetrix grade B to A.

The Takeaway

What This Means for Your Own Site

If your store is image-heavy and you are stuck one grade short, check the Structure tab before you buy anything else. The path from GTmetrix grade B to A is frequently just image weight, and image weight is the cheapest thing on the list to fix.

If your Total Blocking Time is high, or your server response time is slow, your own move from GTmetrix grade B to A will not look like this one, and image compression will not rescue it. Those are hosting and JavaScript problems, and they need different work. We would rather tell you that up front than sell you the wrong fix.

One caveat worth keeping in mind: the GTmetrix letter grade is not itself a Google ranking factor. Largest Contentful Paint is a Core Web Vital and genuinely matters, and the grade is a convenient summary of whether the underlying numbers are healthy. Chasing the letter for its own sake is how people end up installing five plugins that make a site slower. Run your own test at GTmetrix and read the Structure tab first.

It can when images are the main outstanding issue, which was the case here. GTmetrix Structure audits include properly sizing images, serving them in next-gen formats, and deferring offscreen images. Fixing those three lifted Structure from 85% to 89%, and that was enough to cross the A threshold. On a site with slow server response or heavy JavaScript, image work alone would not be enough.

Because the site was already fast. Total Blocking Time was already 0ms and Cumulative Layout Shift was already 0 before we started. When those are clean, there is very little headroom left in the Performance score, and the remaining gains come from Structure and Largest Contentful Paint instead.

The grade itself is not a Google ranking factor. What matters is the underlying data, particularly Largest Contentful Paint, which is a Core Web Vital. The grade is useful as a plain-English summary for site owners and as a checkpoint that the underlying metrics are healthy, not as a target to game.
